Integrated Undersea Surveillance System
Improvement Program (IUSS)

One of the major elements of the IUSS is SOSUS, the Sound Surveillance System. SOSUS consists of a number of acoustic listening arrays connected to shore stations by undersea cables. Some of the arrays are so distant from the shore stations that repeaters must be used to re-amplify the signals. These long undersea transmission lines are actually single coaxial cables on which the various hydrophone signals are frequency multiplexed. The hardware that powers the coaxial cables, and separates and demultiplexes the returning signals is referred to as the shore terminal equipment group, or simply the "front end." This project is providing a new digital front end for SOSUS that is highly reliable and will operate autonomously. The work is sponsored by the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command via Lucent Technologies.
