HOW YOU CAN HELP

The Applied Physics Laboratory of the University of Washington (APL-UW) relies on private gifts to help support its scientific endeavors. Whatever amount you can give and whatever aspect of APL-UW science you choose to support, your gift will truly make a difference.

APL-UW receives no support from the state of Washington. It must rely on private gifts for new faculty positions, new buildings, new student fellowships, seed funding for new research projects, endowments, and matching funds to secure federal research grants. The Laboratory relies on such funds to support educational outreach to schools, mentor undergraduate students throughout the UW, and to create new programs.

There are a variety of ways to give, including outright gifts of cash, securities, and real estate; fellowships; endowments; life income gifts; bequests; and membership in the APL-UW Associates.

FELLOWSHIPS

Supporting students, especially during their critical first year of graduate study, is one of the top priorities at APL-UW. Support is also needed for postdoctoral fellows. Your contribution to fellowships will help train the next generation of scientists and engineers.

ENDOWMENTS

Endowments are forever. They provide invaluable support for fellowships, endowed chairs, and seed funds to encourage daring and innovative research. They are an important tool for recruiting young faculty.

LIFE INCOME GIFTS

Life income gifts offer an opportunity to support APL-UW and, at the same time, provide income for the donor and/or a loved one. Such gifts may provide increased income, charitable income tax deductions, and estate tax savings. Cash or appreciated assets such as real estate or securities may be used to fund life income gifts. Appreciated assets contributed through life income gifts may also generate capital gains tax savings. APL-UW can provide illustrations of the tax and financial benefits of life income gifts, at your request.

BEQUESTS

Charitable bequests through wills and trusts are an easy way for individuals to support APL-UW. If you have specific interests or questions, the APL-UW Director's Office can provide appropriate language for review by your attorney.

APL-UW ASSOCIATES

APL-UW Associates are annual donors who have a special interest in the scientific process and the scientists who work at the Laboratory. Associates membership will fund a wide variety of projects at APL-UW: graduate fellowships, seed money to support innovative research, and scholarships for students to attend international meetings and symposia. This support is extraordinarily important because of its flexibility.

The most significant benefit of APL-UW Associates membership is the personal satisfaction gained by helping the Laboratory maintain its high standards of service to students and the community, and by investing in innovative research programs. Associates enjoy many membership privileges. Learn more and please join us!
