Colin Sandwith
Professor Colin Sandwith is a pre-eminent mechanical engineer with special expertise in marine corrosion. In one of his early efforts for the U.S. Navy, he worked to solve corrosion problems with submarine sonar domes and the transducers and hydrophones they shield. His solution reduced the corrosion debris recovered from boats during their overhauls from more than a cubic yard to a few quarts. His analysis and design programs for Navy systems now include autopsy and design reviews of under-sea fiber-optic and electromagnetic cables, connectors, and instrument housings to improve their watertight integrity throughout their designed lifetimes.
