Want to take a course on sound?
Principal Engineer Peter Dahl offers a Discovery Seminar for UW students preceding the fall quarter. In this General and Interdisciplinary Studies course (GIS 167) students consider the physics of sounds experienced every day such as music, the voice, the environmental sounds surrounding us, and less familiar sounds like medical ultrasound and underwater sound (sonar).
Students build their own hydrophone to listen to underwater sounds like marine mammals and noise from boats and ships, and they learn about sound waves, frequency, decibels, sound speed, and how sound travels through air, water, and our bodies.
Take a look at Dr. Dahl's course website. Interested? Contact Peter Dahl.

Attending a major research university affords undergraduate students the opportunity to gain research experience. APL-UW understands the importance of research as a learning tool and its effects on how students view their coursework and future education choices. Many undergraduates are hired as student helpers on APL-UW research projects and return for several years, taking on greater responsibility and garnering invaluable career preparation.
