The Applied Physics Laboratory's Ocean Engineering Department announces a Senior Engineer position vacancy. For half a century APL-UW engineers have demonstrated expertise in science and technology that has gained them a national reputation. The Ocean Engineering Department serves as a resource for scientists at APL-UW, the University of Washington, other research organizations, and the U.S. Navy. Ocean Engineering personnel provide the engineering expertise and know-how to support ambitious basic and applied research programs in extreme environments from the Arctic to the depths of the ocean.

Duties:

The Senior Engineer will:
  1. Serve as Principal Investigator/Camp Leader supporting the US Navy's Arctic Submarine Laboratory (ASL) sea-ice experiments.
  2. Serve as liaison to the US Navy/ASL and other sponsors (e.g., NSF) and vendors.
  3. Be responsible for sea-ice camp planning, design, and operations.
  4. Write funding proposals, develop budget estimates and project schedules, lead field operations, develop and manage a strong arctic sea-ice operations group at APL-UW.
  5. Participate in other APL-UW projects during non-Arctic camp time.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Arctic sea-ice operations: must have personal experience in locating suitable sites for sea-ice camps and aircraft runways.
  • Mechanical Design Engineering.
  • Liaison with multiple research organizations.
  • Supervision of medium-sized staff (15-25).
  • Leadership and Group Management skills to include effective team building.
  • Sound decision-making and judgment.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Training and development.
  • Project planning and management to include proficiency with organizational software (e.g., Excel, MS Project).
  • Computer software experience with Solidworks or other CAD software.
  • Self-motivated and work well with teams and small groups.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:
  • Master's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional work experience with marine operations, ocean acoustics, and under-ice diving operations.
Condition of Employment:

Applicants must be U.S. citizens willing to obtain security clearance, and work in a classified setting.
