Responsibilities:

The APL Mechanical Engineer 3 will assist in the development of the Regional Scale Nodes (RSN) underwater cabled ocean observatory off the Washington and Oregon coasts. The RSN (formally called NEPTUNE) is the part of the National Science Foundation's Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) responsible for designing, developing and installing a network of 800 kilometers of fiber optic cable to deliver power and bandwidth to deep-water science nodes spread across the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate. This transformational system will enable new and exciting science experiments to help explore ocean processes critical to our understanding of the environment.

The APL Mechanical Engineer 3 will work as part of an engineering team applying new technologies in the design and development of this underwater cabled network. The project will include all aspects of the development from design conception to prototype development, system installation and at-sea testing.

Requirements:
  • MSME or BSME with 2 to 5 years experience
  • Excellent academic record
  • Good analytical skills
  • Proficiency with modern CAD/CAM design and analysis tools
  • Good verbal and communications skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, self motivation
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:
  • Structural design experience
  • Experience in mechanical packaging of electronic components
  • At-sea experience in installing and operating oceanographic systems
  • Ability to perform finite element structural analysis
Condition of Employment:
