Microwave Remote Sensing

William Keller is an expert in microwave remote sensing of wind-disturbed water surfaces. He has published extensively in various journal such as the Journal of Geophysical Research. His journal publications contain several significant advances leading to currently accepted theories for microwave scattering by ocean surface waves, including experimental of the composite surface theory, the use of Doppler shift to measure the orbital velocity of ocean surface waves, the concept of the ocean wave-radar modulation transfer function, and the effect of the sea-air temperature difference on the ocean radar cross section. Microwave scatterometers that he designed are used by many organizations. His current interest is remote sensing of ocean surface winds, waves, and currents using microwave radar operated from blimps and aircraft. Mr. Keller joined the Laboratory in 1992.
