Mechanical Design

Francis Olson applies CAD techniques to the design, modification, and testing of marine systems. He has installed radiometers on sea-going vessels to support remote sensing experiements, and underwater probes and cameras to study the emmissivity of foam on the sea surface. To facilitate medical ultrasound research, he designed experimental chambers and transducers.
Mr. Olson assisted in the preliminary construction and deployment of the ATOC array and the mechanical design of the shoreside electronics system. He is a veteran of eight arctic ice camps, where he has served as supervisor for the entire field operation, acquired materials, and prepared and maintained mechanical systems, including autonomous underwater vehicles used for under-ice data collection. Mr. Olson has been with the Laboratory since 1981.
