Chief of Naval Research Visits APL-UW

The Laboratory was honored by the visit of RADM David Hahn, Chief of Naval Research, on Friday, 5 October. Executive Director Lisa Zurk briefed him on APL-UW's core competencies, facilities, and infrastructure, and then opened the discussion to special areas of expertise relevant to naval research and development.

RADM Hahn learned about a range of current science and technology programs by engaging with the APL-UW researchers who lead them. He praised each and offered motivational comments about future directions and naval applications. These shared insights are greatly appreciated as the Laboratory strives to enhance our U.S. Navy research and development portfolio.

The researchers and programs presented to RADM Hahn included Sarah Webster and Bob Miyamoto: Carina, the advanced underwater glider for surveillance, communication, navigation, and environmental sensing; Lee Thompson and Warren Fox: Sonar technologies for ultra-high resolution imaging and obstacle avoidance; Tom Sanford: Electromagnetic sensing of the ocean technologies and applications; Dana Manalang and Mike Harrington: Cabled array opportunities for naval research; Andy Stewart: Marine hydrokinetic energy applications for naval systems; Craig McNeil: Coastal environmental sensing; Axel Schweiger and Jamie Morison: International Cooperative Engagement Program for Polar Research, Seasonal Ice Zone Reconnaissance Surveys, and Submarine Arctic Science Program; and Todd Hefner: Mine countermeasures and unexploded ordnance acoustics.
