PEOPLE making a world of difference through innovative science + engineering

Diversity is a core value of the University of Washington and the Applied Physics Laboratory. We are focused on building and sustaining an inclusive and equitable research environment for all staff, students, and collaborators. We believe every member on our team enriches our community by exposing us to a broad range of ways to understand and engage with the world, identify challenges, and to discover, design, and deliver solutions.

Land Acknowledgment

The Laboratory stands and conducts research on the lands and waterways of the Coast Salish Peoples, whose ancestors resided here since time immemorial. Many Indigenous peoples thrive in this place — alive and strong.

APL-UW History   Facilities   Funding & Gifting

Since 1943, APL-UW has conducted acoustic and oceanographic studies in how deep ocean variability affects Navy systems. Today, our scientists and engineers pursue leadership roles in acoustic and remote sensing, ocean physics and engineering, medical and industrial ultrasound, polar science and logistics, environmental and information systems, and electronic and photonic systems.

Video: 60 Years of Acoustics Research at APL-UW

A presentation by Kevin Williams at the Acoustical Society of America meeting in Pittsburgh, PA, May 2015.

APL-UW research is conducted in four campus buildings: the original Henderson Hall, the (Old) Oceanography Building, the Portage Bay Building, and the Benjamin Hall Interdisciplinary Research Building. Our research vessels are piered on Lake Union.

Research at APL-UW is funded by grants and contracts, primarily with government federal agencies such as the U.S. Navy, NSF, NASA, NIH, and DARPA.

APL-UW receives no support from the state of Washington. The Laboratory relies on private gifts for new faculty positions, new buildings, student fellowships, seed funding for new research projects, endowments, matching funds to secure federal research grants, educational outreach to schools, undergraduate mentorships, and new programs.

You can make gifts to the APL-UW Institute, the Laboratory's Joseph P. Henderson Endowment Fund, the APL-UW Discretionary Account, or make a Life Income Gift.

Find information about online giving at the University of Washington Foundation secure website.

Individuals and organizations can pledge gifts to APL-UW programs. Download, complete, and return the form. Indicate which fund(s) you wish to receive your gift.
